This article is an example of a very simple WordPress theme, demonstrating:
- The loop
- Bootstrap Nav Walker
USE THIS THEME AS THE BASIS FOR YOUR PROJECT, unless you prefer to take a different approach which gets similar results.
See WordPress custom theme examples for a list of examples.
style.css
The style.css
file contains:
- A CSS comment which contains "Theme Name: Unique Name"
- Your CSS styles
- Bootstrap styles first
- Custom styles second
/* Theme Name: MGDP 2060 Example After the CSS comment, paste the Bootstrap CSS styles. Below the Bootstrap CSS styles, create override styles to customize Bootstrap */
header.php
The header.php
file contains HTML that is shared by all pages.
Example:
<!DOCTYPE html> <html lang="en"> <head> <meta charset="utf-8" /> <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=edge" /> <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1" /> <meta name="description" content="Description here"> <meta name="keywords" content="Your keywords"> <meta name="author" content="author name"> <link rel="stylesheet" href="<?php echo get_stylesheet_directory_uri(); ?>" type="text/css" media="screen" /> <?php if ( is_home() ) { $title = 'Home : Classroom Example'; } else { $title = the_title( ); } ?> <title><?php echo $title; ?></title> </head> <body> <!-- BEGIN Bootstrap NavBar --> <nav class="navbar navbar-default" role="navigation"> <div class="container-fluid"> <!-- Brand and toggle get grouped for better mobile display --> <div class="navbar-header"> <button type="button" class="navbar-toggle" data-toggle="collapse" data-target="#bs-example-navbar-collapse-1"> <span class="sr-only">Toggle navigation</span> <span class="icon-bar"></span> <span class="icon-bar"></span> <span class="icon-bar"></span> </button> <a class="navbar-brand" href="<?php echo home_url(); ?>"> <?php bloginfo('name'); ?> </a> </div> <?php wp_nav_menu( array( 'menu' => 'primary', 'theme_location' => 'primary', 'depth' => 2, 'container' => 'div', 'container_class' => 'collapse navbar-collapse', 'container_id' => 'bs-example-navbar-collapse-1', 'menu_class' => 'nav navbar-nav', 'fallback_cb' => 'wp_bootstrap_navwalker::fallback', 'walker' => new wp_bootstrap_navwalker()) ); ?> </div> </nav> <!-- END Bootstrap NavBar -->
index.php
The index.php
file contains the HTML for the main body of pages.
Example:
<?php get_header(); ?> <div class="container main home"> <h1>Custom Theme Example Three</h1> <div class="post-container"> <?php if (have_posts()) : while (have_posts()) : the_post(); echo '<div class="post">'; echo '<h2 class="post-title">'; echo the_title(); echo '</h2>'; echo '<div class="post-content">'; the_content(); echo '<hr />'; echo '</div>'; the_date('Y-m-d', '<h3>', '</h3>'); echo '</div>'; endwhile; endif; ?> </div> </div> <?php get_footer(); ?>
The footer.php
file contains shared footer information, such as copyright and legal statements.
Example:
<footer class="container bottombar"> Footer info goes here </footer> </body> </html>
functions.php
Create a file named functions.php
<?php /* This is an example of a simple functions.php file. */ // Require the Bootstrap NavWalker code be included here: require_once ('wp_bootstrap_navwalker.php'); // Register Custom Navigation Walker register_nav_menus( array( 'primary' => __( 'Primary Menu', 'THEMENAME' ), ) );
Create a file named wp_bootstrap_navwalker.php
.
