Deck One is a deck in Cards!, designed by Patrick Ladwig.

Physical deck

Uniform back, customized front.

Deck syntax

Deck syntax (basic):

The Four:

Let F be a set of four elements.

Let the elements of F be designated F1, F2, F3, F4.

Let the four elements be idempotent::

  • Equally powerful, equally interchangeable.
  • In effect, four instances of a single entity (a singleton).

The Twelve = The Forty-Eight, separated into Four Groups of Three:

Let T designate The Twelve.

Let the elements of T be designated T1, T2, T3, T4.

Let there be an attribute function of each Tn:

  • Tn (F1)
  • Tn (F2)
  • Tn (F3)
  • Tn (F4)

Read as "Tn function F1, Tn function B," etc., where n enumerates T1, T2, T3, and T4.

Game syntax

Patrick's notes:

  • Four Suits/Categories/Colors
  • One each, Elite/Captain/Stealth/Phantom
  • Twelve each, Characters

Goal: collect one character from each color for trick/book.

  • Draw-discard rummy (?)
  • First empty hand wins (?)

Game syntax (basic):

  • Deal 6 cards to each player
  • Set deck face down in middle
  • Turn over top card to create discard pile
  • Player to dealer's left goes first
  • Player takes top card from discard pile, if desired,
    • Or draws the top card on the deck and adds it to hand
    • if player has all four colors of villain, book the set
  • Player selects a card from hand to discard
  • Play continues clockwise
  • First player to book all cards wins the game.

Advanced

Alternate game syntax:

  • Individual Fn cards have significance: F1, F2, F3, F3

Alternate goals:

  • Get rid of Fn card, don't be last to exit game, loser ends up holding all Fn cards
  • Fn cards are dealt out separately at start of game, face down. Each player looks but does not reveal their color. At some point, a player may choose to reveal their color, perhaps a one-time special event, after which gameplay proceeds differently -- details to be worked out.
