Freeciv is a single, and multiplayer, turn-based strategy game for workstations and personal computers inspired by the proprietary Sid Meier's Civilization series.

Description

It is available for Microsoft Windows, OSX, and linux.

Released under the GNU General Public License, Freeciv is free and open source software.

The game's default settings are closest to Civilization II, in both gameplay and graphics (including the units and the isometric grid).

Game management

Managing saved game files:

In a local game started from the client, the games will be saved into the default Freeciv save directory (typically ~/.freeciv/saves/).

If you are running the server from the command line, however, any savegames will be stored in the current directory.

If the saveturns server variable is set, the server will periodically save the game automatically (which can take a lot of disk space in some cases).

In any case, you should check the ownership, permissions, and disk space/quota for the directory or partition you're trying to save to.

Where are the save games located by default?

  • On Unix like system, it will be in ~/.freeciv/saves
  • On Windows XP, it will be in $HOME\.freeciv\saves where $HOME is usually "C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data"
  • On Windows 7 it can be found under "C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming"
You could change this by setting the HOME environment variable, or using the --saves command line argument to the server (you would have to run it separately).

Deleting saved games

Find the directory that contains the .sav.gz files, and delete the files.

For my computer, the directory is /home/kernigh/.freeciv/saves.

(The .freeciv directory is invisible, so you might need to show hidden files.)

You can also rename the files; I moved save1-game7.sav.gz to game1-save7.sav.gz, so the list item changed from save1-game7 to game1-save7.
