7-Zip is a computer program for archiving files.
It is particularly useful for Microsoft Windows users, when working with files in the .tar and .gz formats.

- OS X has built-in handling for these formats
- Microsoft Windows does not: users need to install 7-Zip or some other application
Licenses
7-Zip is free and open source software.
Most of the source code is under the GNU LGPL license.
The unRAR code is under a mixed license: GNU LGPL + unRAR restrictions.
