7-Zip is a computer program for archiving files.

It is particularly useful for Microsoft Windows users, when working with files in the .tar and .gz formats.

.tar and .gz are file formats for archiving and compression.

  • OS X has built-in handling for these formats
  • Microsoft Windows does not: users need to install 7-Zip or some other application

Licenses

7-Zip is free and open source software.

Most of the source code is under the GNU LGPL license.

The unRAR code is under a mixed license: GNU LGPL + unRAR restrictions.
