She works in the area of [[mathematical biology]] and [[computational biology]] and [[complex systems]], especially spatiotemporal organization in [[Biological system|biological systems]].<br />

She is also a fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, Indian Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Sciences.<br />
<br />
She did her B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Physics from Visva Bharati University and her M.Phil and Ph.D. in theoretical Biology from Jawaharlal Nehru University.<br />
<br />
She worked as a scientist at the [[Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology]], Hyderabad since 1983.<br />
<br />
She has written many popular science articles in journals and magazines in both English and Bengali, and has co-authored [[NCERT]] science text books.<br />
