== Description ==

This heuristic (also sometimes called a [[metaheuristic]]) is routinely used to generate useful solutions to [[Optimization (mathematics)|optimization]] and [[Search algorithm|search problem]]s.

Genetic algorithms belong to the larger class of [[evolutionary algorithm]]s (EA), which generate solutions to optimization problems using techniques inspired by natural evolution, such as [[Heredity|inheritance]], [[Mutation (genetic algorithm)|mutation]], [[selection (genetic algorithm)|selection]], and [[crossover (genetic algorithm)|crossover]].
